Artificial Liver system (USA-Hong Kong-Continental China)

· The Company has developed an artificial liver to be used on patients that are waiting for transplantation.

· Numerous attempts have been made over the past 30 years to develop a surrogate technique to provide either partial or total metabolic support for the patient with a failing liver.

· The clinical objective is to provide a temporary liver assist until a patient’s own liver regenerates or until a liver transplant can be performed.

Description of the Technology:

The Bioartificial Liver System comprises an extracorporeal process for continuously withdrawing a patient’s whole venous blood, maintaining temperature, oxygenating to arterial levels, adjusting pH to 7.2, and perfusing a hollow fiber bioreactor charged with primary porcine hepatocytes before returning the blood to the patient.

Early Clinical Results:

Five patients have received treatments under this proto

col, four of which have sufficient data for evaluation. No serious or unexpected adverse events were observed. Patients showed an improvement in encephalopathy, improved blood ammonia and lactate levels and improved pulmonary function during their participation in the study. An additional 10 patients will be enrolled to complete the Phase I/II study. 150 patients will be necessary for Phase III.

  • US Market Approval: in 48 months approx.
  • China Market Approval: expected in 24 months
  • Hong- Kong Market Approval: expected in 14 months

Hong Kong is expected to accept product registration based on a single site, open label Phase I/II study and require 14 months.
